Animal Shelters
Animal Shelters save animals lives Print E-mail
An animal shelter is a place that houses abandoned, abused animals until a new home can be found. There are probably one or two in the area you live in. Many of the animals are turned in because the people can no longer afford to care for them.. Many, many others have been rescued from abusive situations. The shelter will provide appropriate medical care. They will also seek to bring charges to anyone found guilty of animal abuse. The shelters become overcrowded very quickly, and while many try to maintain a "no kill policy" it is almost impossible to adhere to this. The sheer volume of the animals coming in, and the lack of good homes or people unwilling to adopt a pet make the possibility of euthanasia very real. Shelters offer a low cost spay/neuter program, and often assist with medical care associated with adoption. There is just so much that they can do, though. The shelter relies on donations of food and supplies to keep running. Some private citizens donate large sums of money to them for the express purpose of maintaining the shelter and caring for the animals. They also have volunteers that will come in on a regular basis to care for, clean, and exercise tha pets. A shelter is a good place to spend some time if you are an animal lover. Anything you can do is always appreciated.
