Animal Shelters
Animal shelter adoptions.. Print E-mail
Anyone who has ever visited an animal shelter knows how heartbreaking it can be! I want to take ALL the animals home with me. I can't stand to see those sweet faces looking out from behind those cage doors, hoping that you will pick them to go to a forever home! If only I could. Volunteering at an animal shelter is very rewarding, though. Even if you can't give them a home, you can provide a little bit of companionship and affection. I always have a pocket full of 'treats' when I go to visit. They love it! I think they actually look forward to seeing me. Wishful thinking on my part? I don't think so. You'd be amazed at what and who they remember. The shelters try their best to provide care for all the animals they have, but sometimes there are too many abandoned pets to keep up with at any given time. They rely on their volunteers. In the area where I live there are two shelters. Both of them are doing their best to keep up with the overflow of animals. People are having to give up their pets at an alarming rate due to the fact that they may have lost their job and can no longer properly take care of them. Sometimes they have to make that hard choice. I have 8 furbabies at this time. All but 2 came from our local animal shelter, and believe me, if I had room I would have 8 more! So, volunteer your time at your local shelter, and if you can't spare the time, donate food to them. They need all the help they can get! Thank goodness there are places like shelters for the pets no one wants or can properly care for.

Help for the Animal Shelters Print E-mail
Most animal shelters are operated by people who really love animals and don’t like to see them harmed. The truth is more than 50% of the animals that find their way into those shelters will be euthanized. No I am not one of those people who think animals are more valuable the humans but, I don’t think they are any less valuable. Thanks to the animal shelters, we don’t have to look at or think about the mass execution of animals that takes place on a daily basis. Many of them are euthanized and people are out there looking for them. Many animal shelters are run on very little government and state funding. Some rely on donations from everyday people like you and me. They do the best they can with what they receive. I know you give to a wide variety of charities throughout the year and I ask that you think about supporting one of your community animal shelters with a donation. Even if it is a small donation. If you think about it, you can support your animal shelter with different donation types. You can buy food and donate it or just about anything that animals need. I am sure they will accept it. If you are looking for a dog or cat for a personal pet, try one of your local shelters. You may be the difference between the animal living a full life or reaching the state of transformation on an early schedule. Imagine how many strays you would have to meet every morning coming out of your door if there were no animal shelters. I realize they are not something you think about everyday. If you will give them just one thought a year and act upon that thought, you could be the difference in the operation of a shelter and the life of an animal. I know you are a good person. Please give it some thought.

A little time goes a long way Print E-mail
If you have some spare time during your week or weekend, and have a lot of helping animals, it can be a very rewarding experience to volunteer at your local animal shelter. Some of the best memories that I have in my life are the days that I volunteered at the local animal shelter in my town. To be honest, before volunteering, I had no idea how much my time could help so many different animals. I didn't know what to expect when I arrived, but as soon as I got there, I got right to work. My first task was taking the dogs to the designated play area for their daily exercise. I walked the dogs, one by one to the area, and watched as each one experienced freedom and fun. These dogs were so wonderful and lovable! I was so happy to be doing something to help and I will never forget knowing that without volunteers such as myself, these animals would not get the loving care that they need and desire. Volunteering your time at your local animal shelter can help so many. If you think that you may be interested in volunteering, the first step is to contact the shelter or shelters in your area. Let the receptionist know that you are interested in volunteering, and the days and times that you are available. Typically, you will be asked a serious of questions so that the shelter can find a volunteer position that will suit you. Whether you have one hour a day or one hour a week, the good feelings of helping animals will stay with you for a life time.

Foster Parents for Animals Print E-mail
In an attempt to grow the No Kill approach to animal shelters a new trend is growing. This trend is a foster care program for animals. With this program you provide care for an ill or abandoned pet until the agency is able to provide a permanent home for the pets. It is not an easy road to follow at times as you have to be as careful about whom you let foster a dog as you are about who ends up adopting them. To become a foster parent you must go through several channels. The first step is the application process with the agency. After that a representative from the agency conducts an interview with you and your family. During the interview the ask questions about your knowledge of caring for the specific type of animal you are applying for. Also know that they are looking at your kids as well to see if the animals would be safe there. When I say safe I mean is that specific breed you want to adopt “kid friendly” not all animals like small children. On the contrary the agency needs to know that your children know how to handle animals. An agency would be wrong to place an abused puppy into a home where the kids would be rough with them. They also have to be prepared with a support program in place for the foster families to help them through issues. Fostering is not just parking an animal somewhere; it is about socializing them and giving them the skills to be successful in their forever homes.

Animal Shelters save animals lives Print E-mail
An animal shelter is a place that houses abandoned, abused animals until a new home can be found. There are probably one or two in the area you live in. Many of the animals are turned in because the people can no longer afford to care for them.. Many, many others have been rescued from abusive situations. The shelter will provide appropriate medical care. They will also seek to bring charges to anyone found guilty of animal abuse. The shelters become overcrowded very quickly, and while many try to maintain a "no kill policy" it is almost impossible to adhere to this. The sheer volume of the animals coming in, and the lack of good homes or people unwilling to adopt a pet make the possibility of euthanasia very real. Shelters offer a low cost spay/neuter program, and often assist with medical care associated with adoption. There is just so much that they can do, though. The shelter relies on donations of food and supplies to keep running. Some private citizens donate large sums of money to them for the express purpose of maintaining the shelter and caring for the animals. They also have volunteers that will come in on a regular basis to care for, clean, and exercise tha pets. A shelter is a good place to spend some time if you are an animal lover. Anything you can do is always appreciated.
