Foster Parents for Animals Print E-mail
In an attempt to grow the No Kill approach to animal shelters a new trend is growing. This trend is a foster care program for animals. With this program you provide care for an ill or abandoned pet until the agency is able to provide a permanent home for the pets. It is not an easy road to follow at times as you have to be as careful about whom you let foster a dog as you are about who ends up adopting them. To become a foster parent you must go through several channels. The first step is the application process with the agency. After that a representative from the agency conducts an interview with you and your family. During the interview the ask questions about your knowledge of caring for the specific type of animal you are applying for. Also know that they are looking at your kids as well to see if the animals would be safe there. When I say safe I mean is that specific breed you want to adopt “kid friendly” not all animals like small children. On the contrary the agency needs to know that your children know how to handle animals. An agency would be wrong to place an abused puppy into a home where the kids would be rough with them. They also have to be prepared with a support program in place for the foster families to help them through issues. Fostering is not just parking an animal somewhere; it is about socializing them and giving them the skills to be successful in their forever homes.
